Leaving the College of William and Mary in 1776 to fight in the American Revolution, he served in several campaigns and was wounded (Dec., 1776) at the battle of Trenton. He later studied law (178083) under Thomas Jefferson, and the friendship that sprang up between them was the foundation for Monroe's political career.
