Obrenovic or Obrenovich[both: Obre´nuvich] Pronunciation Key, Serbian dynasty. Its founder, Milos Obrenovic (see Milos), was the first modern Serbian ruler. The murder (1817) of Karageorge (Karadjordje), probably at Milos's instigation, started the long feud between the Obrenovic and the Karadjordjevic families. Milos's son Michael, prince of Serbia, was assassinated in 1868. His successor, Prince Milan, was proclaimed king of Serbia in 1882. Milan's son Alexander, king of Serbia, the last ruling Obrenovic, was assassinated in 1903; on his death the Karadjordjevic dynasty again came into power.
