Edward Seaga 1930, prime minister of Jamaica (198089). Born in Boston, Mass., to Jamaican parents of Lebanese descent, he was minister of welfare and development (196267) and finance minister (196772). In 1980, his conservative Jamaican Labor party (JLP) won the elections and he became prime minister. He severed relations with Cuba and promoted close ties with the United States. He was succeeded by former socialist prime minister Michael Manley.
