Slovakia is a parliamentary democracy. It has a unicameral legislature, the 150-seat national council, whose members are popularly elected by proportional representation for four-year terms. The president is elected by popular vote for a five-year term. Following legislative elections, the leader of the majority party or the majority coalition is usually appointed prime minister by the president. The cabinet is appointed by the president on the recommendation of the prime minister. The main political parties are the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia, the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union, Party DirectionThird Way, the Hungarian Coalition party, the New Civic Alliance, and the Slovak Communist party. For administrative purposes, the country is divided into 8 regions and 79 districts.
