TOrshavn or Thorshavn[both: tOrs´´houn´] Pronunciation Key, city (1998 est. pop. 16,095), capital of the Faeroe Islands, on SE Streymoy Island, Denmark. It is the commercial and shipping center of the Faeroe Islands and is also a major fishing port. The city has fish-processing plants, a shipyard, and produces woolen products. TOrshavn was probably founded in the 10th cent. During World War II it was occupied by the British (194245).
