Extends from Sacramento Valley (W) to the Sierra Nevada (E), where
Mokelumne Peak rises to 9,332 ft/2,844 m.
Narrows to 5 mi/8 km in E center. Bounded S in
part by Mokelumne R. and its N fork; bounded N in part by Cosumnes R.
and its S fork. Part of El Dorado Natl. Forest in E. Pardee and
Camanche reservoirs (both on Mokelumne R.) on S boundary, in SW co.
Agr. (barley, corn, oats, grapes, walnuts, cattle); timber; gold
mining; quarrying (clay, sand, gravel). Gold Rush (1849) region made
famous in the tales of Mark Twain and Bret Harte, centers around
Jackson. Many old gold camps survive. Recreational region (trout
fishing, lakes, winter sports). Formed 1854.
