Warm Springs Creek, SW Mont. Continental Divide passes E-W
9 mi/14.5 km to S; 46°04'N 113°05'W.
Cattle, hay; tourism. RR terminus to W of city. Discovery Basin Sky
Area to NW; Georgetown L. reservoir to W; Lost Creek State Park to N;
parts of Deerlodge Natl. Forest to NW and SE; part of Beaverhead Natl.
Forest to SW; Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness Area to SW. Montana State
Fish Hatchery at Washoe Park on N side of town. Marcus Daly chose this
place (1883), first named Copperopolis, to build the smelter and
reduction plant for the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. and in the 1890s
tried unsuccessfully to make it the state capital. The city's copper
smelter, which was one of the largest in the world, was closed in the
1970s as the copper industry declined. High smokestack
(535 ft/163 m) is now landmark and state park
