co., S Kansas, at the confluence of the Arkansas and the Walnut rivers,
near the Okla. border, and 14 mi/23 km S of
Winfield; 37°04'N 97°02'W. Elev.
1,120 ft/341 m. RR junction. Located in an
agr. and oil region (rich oil fields were discovered in 1914). Mfg.
(wheat milling, printing, transportation equip., mobile homes,
petroleum refining). Ark. City was the starting point for the run
(1893) of thousands of homesteaders into the Cherokee strip; a marker S
of the city commemorates the event. Cowley County Community Col. and
Vocational Tech. School in city. Cowley State Fishing L. to E. Cherokee
