Beaverhead , county ( 5,572 sq mi/14,431 sq km; 1990 pop. 8,424), SW Mont.; Dillon; 45°07'N 112°54'W. Mt. region bounded by Idaho and Continental Divide on W and S. Crossed by Big Hole (forms part of N boundary), Beaverhead, and Red Rock rivers. Talc mining; sheep, cattle; alfalfa, hay, barley, potatoes. Upper and Lower Red Rock lakes formed by Red Rock R., in Red Rock L. Natl. Wildlife Refuge in SE, a trumpeter swan nesting area. Maverick Mt. ski area in N center; Bannack State Park in center; Beaverhead Rock State Park on NE boundary; sections of Beaverhead Natl. Forest and Bitterroot Range in W; widely scattered section of Beaverhead Natl. Forest in W, N, S, and SE, including part of Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness Area in extreme NW. Big Hole Natl. Battlefield-Nez Perce Natl. Historic Park in NW near Wisdom. Formed 1865.
