122°28'W. A port of entry on Bellingham Bay, arm of Rosario Strait
(to SW) and Strait of Ga. (to NW), one of the best landlocked harbors
on the Pacific coast, 17 mi/27 km S of Canada
(B.C.) border. Ferry service to Alaska. Vegetables, berries, grain,
alfalfa; dairying; cattle; mfg. (machinery, electrical equip., printing
and publishing, concrete prods., food processing, wood prods., apparel,
aircraft parts, beverages, plastic prods., shipbuilding, vehicle
parts). It is an important shipping point for lumber, pulp, paper, and
canned and frozen fruit. Settled in 1852 as Whatcom, it merged with 3
adjoining towns to form Bellingham in 1903. Western Wash. Univ.,
Whatcom Community Col., and Whatcom Mus. of History and Art are in the
city, which has many notable scenic parks. Lummi Indian Reservation to
W. Moran State Park is on Orcas Isl. in Bellingham Bay. Inc. 1904.
