the Yellowstone R., in a valley surrounded by low mt. ranges; 45°48'N
108°32'W. Mont.'s largest city. Medical, mfg., and trade center for
the S Mont. and N Wyo. region. Mfg. (printing and publishing; paper and
wood prods., dairy prods., processed foods, computer equip., apparel,
fabricated steel, machinery, petroleum prods.). Wheat, sugar beets,
cattle, sheep, and wool are traded. Tourism has become important to the
city's economy. Founded in 1882 by the Minn. and Mont. Improvement
Co., Billings quickly became an important shipping point and
