Bremerton (BRE-muhr-tuhn), city (1990 pop. 38,142), Kitsap co., NW Wash., on W side of Puget Sound, on Sinclair Inlet, at entrance to Port Washington, channel which leads to Dyes Inlet; on Kitsap Peninsula, 13 mi/21 km W of Seattle (linked by ferry); 47°33'N 122°42'W. Terminus of RR spur. Est. 1891 when the area was selected as the site for the U.S. Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Economy centered around the naval installation, where many types of U.S. vessels (including Polaris submarines) are built and repaired in its 6 drydocks. The navy's Polaris Missile Facility is also here. Although the majority of residents are employed by the U.S. govt., some logging and wood-product enterprises exist, and tourism is important; mfg. (textile bags), printing and publishing. Gateway to the Olympic Peninsula, with easy access to the Cascade and Olympic mts. The U.S.S. Missouri, docked here, is a natl. shrine; it was the scene of the official Jap. surrender at the end of World War II. Bremerton Col. (2-year); Naval Mus., U.S.S. Turner Joy (tours).
