Casper , city (1990 pop. 46,742), Natrona co., E central Wyo., on the North Platte R., 150 mi/241 km NW of Cheyenne, at N end of Laramie Mts.; 42°49'N 106°19'W. Elev. 5,123 ft/1,561 m. It is the 2d-largest city in Wyo. and is a rail, distributing, processing, and trade center in a farming, ranching, and mineral-rich area. An oil boom town since the 1st well was tapped in 1890, it has many oil-affiliated industries. Open-pit uranium mining nearby; also gas and coal production. The city has wool and livestock markets, meat-packing plants, and a growing tourist industry. Mfg. (soft drinks; canvas tents; log homes; countertops; printing and publishing; intravenous medications; insulated glass; concrete pipes; ready-mix concrete; sandpaper; fabricated structural steel; steel pipe; metal buildings; pipe valves; vehicle springs; gates; mining equipment; oil field units and skids; fiberglass tanks; woodworking devices; rubber prods.; fire trucks; temperature controls; trophies; aerosol defense prods.). At this fording place on the Oregon Trail, the Mormons in 1847 established a ferry, which was in the 1850s superseded by Platte Bridge. The city was founded (1888) with the coming of the RR and expanded with the discovery of oil at Salt Creek, followed by the Teapot Dome and Big Muddy finds. In 1948 wells in the Lost Soldier field of Sweetwater co. brought another boom. Casper has Casper Col. (2-year) and Wyo. Univ. at Casper. Nearby at Mills, to W, are the Central Wyoming Fairgrounds; the restored Old Fort Caspar Mus. (a clerk's error accounts for the later spelling of the name); and Casper Mt. (c.8,000 ft/2,438 m high). Tourist attractions in the surrounding area include Hell's Half Acre, a spectacular eroded area; Independence Rock; and a petrified forest. Oregon Trail Veterans' Cemetery to NE of town; Natrona County International Airport to NW; Edness Kimball Wilkins State Park to E; Hogadon Ski Area to S. Inc. 1889.
