Chester , city (1990 pop. 41,856), Delaware (DE) co., SE Pa., suburb 13 mi/21 km SW of downtown Philadelphia, on the Delaware R. (bridged to N.J.); 39°51'N 75°22'W. The sect. of the Delaware R., bet. Philadelphia and Del., is Pa.'s only seaport and is intensely developed for that reason. It is a port of entry and has a shipbuilding industry that dates from before the Civil War. Mfg. (metal prods., marine anchors, food prods., machinery, communications equip., paper prods., consumer goods). Area has large storage facilities (tank farms) and ship transfer facilities. The oldest city in the state, Chester (est. as Upland) was the site of William Penn's 1st landing (1682) in Amer. Penn renamed the settlement and convened (1682) the 1st assembly of the prov. here. Seat of Widener Univ. Historic attractions include the foundations of the original settlement, in Gov. Printz Park; the Morton Homestead (1654); the Caleb Pusey House, at Landingford Plantation (1683); the old courthouse (1724); and the Wash. House (1747). Settled c.1644 by Swedes, inc. as a city 1866.
