co., central Colo., 60 mi/97 km SSE of Denver,
on Monument and Fountain creeks, at the foot of Pikes Peak; 38°51'N
104°45'W. Elev. 6,008 ft/1,831 m. RR
junction. Colorado Springs is a residential and year-round vacation and
health resort, with thriving industries that produce a wide variety of
prods. Mfg. (aerospace development and equip., computer equip.,
fabricated metal prods., machinery, medical equip., prepared food
prods., printing and publishing). The town of El Dorado (later Colorado
City) was founded on Fountain Creek by gold miners in 1859. In 1871,
Gen. William Palmer and the Denver and Rio Grande RR est. the modern
city of Fountain Colony nearby; the name was changed to Colorado
Springs because of the many mineral springs in the area. The city grew
as a resort, absorbing the earlier community of Colorado City in 1917.
It has undergone extensive economic growth as well as a boom in pop.

Colorado Springs, and Pikes Peak Community Col. The city is also the
hq. of Pike Natl. Forest. U.S. Air Force Academy to N; U.S. Fort Carson

of Fame, Fine Arts Center, Pioneer Mus., World Figure Skating Hall of
