Coos Bay
(KOOZ), city (1990 pop. 15,076), Coos co., SW Oregon,
a port of entry on Coos Bay, 70 mi/113 km SW
of Eugene; 43°22'N 124°13'W. City extends across peninsula on S
side of Coos Bay, formed by curve in estuary. Town of North Bend
adjoins Coos Bay in N. Pacific Ocean and mouth of Coos Bay
5 mi/8 km to W. Mfg. (frozen shrimp and crab,
seafood processing; wood prods., printing and publishing, plastic
prods., fabricated metal prods., shipbuilding). Shipping, tourism,
fishing, and canning are important industries. It is a worldwide
lumber-shipping port that ships many of its prods. to Japan. Due to
environmental concerns, however, Coos Bay industry has experienced a
depressed market and sluggish growth since the 1980s. Southwestern

Elliott State Forest to NE; Oregon Dunes Natl. Recreation Area to N.
