, city (1990 pop. 27,630), Del. and Kent
co., central Del., on the St. Jones R., which forms Silver Lake
reservoir N of downtown; 39°09'N 75°31'W. In a fertile farming and
fruit-growing region, it is a shipping and canning center. Lumber,
fabricated metal, and glass prods.; printing and publishing; feeds,
paints; paper mill. Dover Air Force Base to SE, including a base mus.
Dover Base Housing (1990 pop. 4,376) for base personnel is just S of
the city limits. The State House (now the Old Statehouse) was finished
in 1792. A new Legislature Hall was built in 1933, but the Old
Statehouse is used for some official functions. Numerous
historic houses and sites remain. Historic preservation and landscaping
have helped the downtown area retain an attractive small town, colonial
appearance. The State Mus. is in the Old Presbyterian Church (1790).
Seat of Del. State Univ. and Wesley Col. Del. Technical and Community
Col. (Terry campus). Chandelle Estates Airport to NE; Little Creek
Wildlife Area to E; Bombay Hook Wildlife Area to NE; N.G. Wilder
Wildlife Area to SW; Dover Downs race track to N. Founded 1683 on
orders of William Penn, laid out 1717, inc. as a city 1929, state
capital since 1977.
