1991 pop. 8,491), N.W.T., Canada, extending E from the Yukon to the
Hornaday R. and N from Wrigley to include Banks Isl. The town of
Inuvik, built in the 1950s and 1960s, is the regional hq. Inuvik is the
largest community N of the Arctic Circle. The N Mackenzie R. forms the
heart of the region, which is steadily developing its oil and
natural-gas resources. Native hunting, sealing, and crafts. The region
is a mix of subarctic coniferous forest and arctic tundra.
