(lah-HEI-nah), city (1990 pop. 9,073), Maui co., on the
W coast of Maui isl., Maui co., Hawaii (HI), on Auau Channel,
13 mi/21 km W of Kahului,
80 mi/129 km ESE of Honolulu; 20°53'N
156°40'W. In a sugarcane and pineapple region. Mfg. (sugarcane
processing). Terminus (S) of scenic train roads from Kaanapali,
3.5 mi/5.6 km N. It was the scene of the first
Eur. settlement in the isls. and served as capital from 1810 until the
seat of govt. was moved (1845) to Honolulu. Hawaii's first newspaper
was printed in Lahaina, and the isl.'s first school was est. here in
1831. A whaling port in the mid-19th cent., Lahaina was also an
important anchorage for the U.S. Pacific Fleet in the 20th cent.
