Lincoln , city (1990 pop. 191,972), Nebr. and Lancaster co., SE Nebr.; 40°49'N 96°41'W. Major RR junction and center. It is the trade and industrial center for a large grain and livestock area. Mfg. (printing and publishing, processed and prepared foods, beverages, construction materials, electronics, motorcycles, sports equip., valves and cylinders, asphalt, automotive parts). Cattle are slaughtered and processed. Many insurance companies have their home offices here. It is the seat of the Univ. of Nebr. (2 campuses), Union Col., Nebr. Wesleyan Univ., and Southeast Community Col. (Lincoln campus). Lied Center for Performing Arts, which attracts musicians and other performers from around the world, is located on Univ. of Nebr. campus. It has a planetarium, Sheldon Art Gall., State Historical Society Mus. and State Mus., Germans from Russia Mus. (Natl.), sculpture garden, and several parks. Several state recreation areas to S and W. State fairgrounds, veterans hospital, state penitentiary S of city, municipal airport. The state capitol, designed by B. G. Goodhue, with sculptures by Lee Lawrie, was completed in 1934. William Jennings Bryan lived in Lincoln from 1887 to 1916; his home is preserved. Founded in 1864 as Lancaster, the city was chosen as the site of the capital in 1867 and renamed. Inc. 1869.
