Lituya Bay (li-TOO-yuh), SE Alaska, inlet of Gulf of Alaska, 100 mi/161 km SE of Yakutat, SSW of Mt. Fairweather; 9 mi/14.5 km long, 2 mi/3.2 km wide; 58°38'N 137°34'W. At head of bay, mts. rise to 11,924 ft/3,634 m. Discovered 1786 by Count de la Perouse, who named it Port des Francais. Famous for extraordinary high tides.
