Mariel
(mah-ree-AIL), town, La Habana prov., W Cuba, on
sheltered bay, 27 mi/43 km WSW of Havana;
23°00'N 82°46'W. In agr. region (sugarcane, tobacco; cattle). Mfg.
of cement and cigars. Shark fishing. Nearby are Cuba's principal
asphalt reserves and a geothermal power plant. There are also limestone
and guano deposits; sulphurous springs. In the outskirts is the Cuban
Naval Acad. Site of 1980 Mariel boat lift, when over 100,000 Cubans
left for Fla. through its port. The Central San Ramon is
3 mi/4.8 km SW.
