Missoula (muh-SUL-uh), city (1990 pop. 42,918), W Mont., 89 mi/143 km W of Helena, on the Clark Fork river, 5 mi/8 km E of mouth of Bitterroot R.; Missoula co.; 46°52'N 114°01'W. Elev. 3,210 ft/978 m. Third- largest city in Mont. In the midst of well-watered valleys, large forests, and dairy and cattle area. Missoula is a commercial center with a busy lumber and paper industry; mfg. (printing and publishing, food, chemicals, construction materials, furniture, lumber, fabricated metal prods.). The “Salish Council” of 1855 opened the area to white settlement. Hell Gate town was founded nearby in 1860 and moved to the Missoula site 6 years later. The coming of the RR (1883, 1908) stimulated Missoula's growth. In the city are the Missoula campus of the Univ. of Montana; Historical Mus. at Fort Missoula to SW, Missoula Mus. of the Arts; and a regional hq. of the U.S. Forest Service. Smokejumper Visitor Center located at Missoula Co. Internatl. Airport NW of city. Rocky Mt. Elk Foundation Visitor Center. Montana Snowbowl Ski Area to N; parts of Lolo Nalt. Forest to N, W, and SE. Inc. 1889.
