Washington co. and Vt. (since 1805), central Vt., at the
junction of the Winooski and North Branch rivers; 44°16'N 72°34'W.
The economy is dominated by state govt. and insurance industries. It is
also a trading center in a lumber, granite, and winter-resort area.
Granite is processed here; mfg. includes printing, plastics, textiles,
and sawmill machinery. Montpelier shares an airport with Barre to SE.
Vermont Col. of Norwich Univ., a community col., the state historical
society, and a state school for children with special needs are here.
Of interest are the state capitol and an art gallery for wood
sculpture. Surrounded by mts., the city has an excellent view of Mt.
