Port Huron (HYUHR-on), city (1990 pop. 33,694), St. Clair co., S Mich., a natural, deepwater port of entry at the exit of the St. Clair R. from L. Huron; 42°59'N 82°25'W. RR junction and RR/ship transfer. It is a shipping center with RR shops. Mfg. includes transportation equip., bldg. materials, machinery, salt, fabricated metal prods., paper prods., chemicals, machinery, consumer goods, electrical equip.; electroplating. The earliest Eur. settlement began (1686) with the Fr. fort, St. Joseph. The town grew after the building (1826) of Fort Gratiot Turnpike (bet. Port Huron and Detroit), ushering in a lumbering era. Local deposits of salt, oil, and natural gas were developed. Connected by St. Clair RR tunnel and an internatl. bridge with Sarnia (Ont.). St. Clair Co. Community Col. The old Fort Gratiot lighthouse marks the St. Clair straits off Port Huron. Thomas Edison grew up here. Internatl. Airport to SW. Lakeport State Park to N. Inc. 1857.
