(se BAH-ni-fais), former city and historic
community, SE Man., Canada, on the Red R. opposite Winnipeg; 49°54'N
97°06'W. Now part of Winnipeg, it is an industrial center, with large
stockyards and meat-packing plants, oil refineries, flour mills, and
breweries. Many of the inhabitants are Fr.-speaking. An R.C. cathedral
is here, as is St. Boniface Col., affiliated with the Univ.
of Man. St. Boniface was founded in 1818 as an R.C. mission.
