In a resort and cherry-growing region (esp. Old Mission Peninsula to
N), with annual cherry festival. Tourism and food processing are major
industries; mfg. (transportation equip., consumer goods, sand and
gravel, fabricated metal prods.). Protestant missionaries came to the
area in 1839. The production of lumber was the major economic activity
until c.1915, when the supply was depleted and farming began.
