Whitehorse
, city (1991 pop. 17,925), Yukon Territory,
NW Canada, in S Yukon, on the Yukon R.; 60°43'N 135°03'W. Elev.
2,305 ft./703 m. River port. On the Alaska
Highway; was terminus of the White Pass and Yukon RR from Skagway
(Alaska; suspended service in 1982). The city is the center of a
gold-mining, hunting, and fur-trapping region that attracts growing
numbers of tourists. After an economic lull in the mid-1980s, the
discovery of the world's largest tungsten reserve at Mae Pass
revitalized the city. Territorial capital since 1952. It is hq. of the
Royal Can. Mounted Police for S Yukon and has an airport, radio and TV
stations, a weather station, and Yukon Col. It was an important supply
and stage center during the Klondike gold rush (1897-1898). During
World War II it was the center of the Canol oil project (closed in
1945). SS Klondike Natl. Historic Site has retired
riverboats.
