SE S.Dak., on the Missouri R. A RR and trade center in an agr. region,
it has grain elevators and creameries. Mfg. (metal prods., marble
prods., electrical equip., printing, consumer goods, feeds); food
processing. Settled 1858 as a fur-trading post, Yankton was the Dakota
territorial capital 1861-1879; the old capitol bldg. still stands. The
former Yankton Col. is now the Yankton Federal Prison. Mount Marty Col.
is here. To W, Lewis and Clark L., formed by Gavins Point Dam
(completed 1956), is part of the Missouri R. basin project. Fish
